2010 Photo Competition: Equality of Opportunity for All Citizens

photo competition

Al Falah Bangladesh is excited to announce our first photo competition, carried out this year to highlight the landmark ruling of May 2008 when the supreme court in Bangladesh declared citizenship for urdu speakers.

Categories for entries

For this competition we are looking for photos of

1. Camp Life. These photographs must come from the camps of Bangladesh where urdu speakers reside (see list here). Camp Life photographs will attract a premium prize. Even if you are not a winner, your photos may be selected to go on tour and form part of an exhibition (online and physical). If you need information about going to camps please email us and we will try to answer your questions. Camp Life category photos could depict childhood, various labour activities, camp conditions, housing, entrepreneurs, cultural activities, religious ceremonies, festivals etc.

2. Common future. This theme can be widely interpreted and is open to Bangladesh based and  international participants. The judges will look for relevance in terms of subject. Photographs which depict refugees, stateless people or excluded people or somehow depict the objective of inclusiveness and commonness of humanity or some aspect of social justice will be favoured. Examples could be excluded people in Europe ( Roma), refugees in Africa, stateless people in former Soviet countries, the homeless, and images of exclusion from conflicts in the middle east (Palestine) etc.

We have given some ideas for subjects within both photo categories, but please do use your imagination when taking and submitting photos

Who can enter?
Our competition is open to everyone, and we particularly encourage women, young people, and people living in the developing world to enter. But please remember the “Camp Life” category is only for photographs from urdu-speaking camps in Bangladesh.
